Tension as Benue villagers kill 3 herdsmen, cattle

There is tension and fears of reprisal attacks in Agatu area of Benue state over the killing by villagers of three herdsmen and their cattle.

Reports say the herdsmen were killed after they reportedly trespassed into some farmlands even as police have reportedly recovered the corpse of two of the victims with search still ongoing for the third victim.

The killing of the herdsmen was confirmed by the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, who informed that efforts are currently underway to restore peace in the area.

“In Agatu, the villagers killed three Fulani herdsmen on Sunday and also killed their cows. Two corpses have been found and we are still searching for the third corpse,” Makam said.

Continuing, he added that; “This is part of the things that incite violence. Both the villagers and the herdsmen need to be taught that as the farmers value their farmlands, the herdsmen value their cows.

“If these incidents happen, it means the proactive actions by the police have not fully been implemented or something has gone wrong. Also, this is not the first time of such attacks.

“We are only referring to the most recent attacks. We have this bad situation in the past, but the magnitude is lower now because of some of the proactive steps taken by the police.”
